Compatibilizer of ABS/PET—— Comparison of SAG and SMA

Acrylonitrile-co-butadiene-co-styrene (ABS) terpolymer/poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) blends were modified using the styrene-acrylonitrile-glycidyl methacrylate (SAG) and styrene-acrylonitrile-maleic anhydride (SMA) terpolymer as compatibilizers.

Then, the mechanical properties in terms of the tensile strength, flexural strength and modulus, notched impact strength, melting flow rate (MFR) and morphology were studied in order to verify the compatibility effect between SAG and SMA.

 

The Formula of the specimens

 

Result 1: No big differences between SAG and SMA modified ABS/PET blends were observed in the tensile strength, flexural strength and modulus

Result 2: The impact strength of SAG modified ABS/PET alloy was much higher (181 J/m) than that of SMA (119 J/m) modified system. In addition, the MFI of the SAG modified ABS/PET system was lower than that of the SMA modified one.

Result 3: According to the SEM images of ABS/PET alloy, the SAG modified ABS/PET alloy showed better dispersion with smaller size of PET domain in the ABS matrix. This implies that the interfacial force improved upon the addition of SAG, resulting in higher impact strength and lowering the MFI.

Conclusion

The only difference between SAG and SMA was the functional groups; epoxy groups in SAG and anhydride group in MAH. As a result, it was suggested that the compatibility effect of SAG would be much higher than that of SMA and this is due to the higher reactivity between SAG and ABS/PET than that between SMA and ABS/PET.
